About AD Keeps The Books

I spent more than fifteen years as a licensed nurse in mental health. Now I keep the books for the clinicians doing that work, in private practices from coast to coast.

AD Keeps The Books is a one-person bookkeeping practice based in Lancaster, California, working with mental health professionals across the country. The one person is me, Aretha Dirde.

My clients are therapists, psychologists, clinical social workers, addiction and recovery counselors, and prescribers in private practice, from solo clinicians to groups of about ten. What they have in common is a full caseload, and financial work that keeps sliding to the end of the week, then the end of the month.

Practice owners come to me for the same four things. They want books that are current, records their tax preparer can use without a scramble, a clear picture of where the practice stands, and an honest answer about whether it is making money. Each month I categorize the transactions, reconcile every account, and send reports written in plain language, short enough to read between sessions. I keep the books, run payroll for practices that already have payroll set up, and prepare year-end 1099s. Tax returns stay with your preparer, and insurance billing stays in your billing system.

Before bookkeeping, I spent more than fifteen years as a licensed nurse in mental health. Nothing about your practice needs explaining to me, including what two late cancellations do to a Tuesday. And because the practice is just me, the person who knows your file this month is the same one who knows it next year.

Meet Aretha

I'm Aretha Dirde, the owner and bookkeeper at AD Keeps The Books. Before this work, I was a licensed nurse for more than fifteen years, working in mental health.

Nursing shaped how I keep records. When you chart in a clinical setting, someone is going to depend on what you wrote and when you wrote it, so you learn to be careful, current, and honest about what you know. I never put that down. A set of books deserves the same care as a chart, because someone depends on it too.

I spent those years alongside clinicians who gave everything to their clients, then sat down after hours to sort receipts and guess where the money went. That guessing is what I wanted to take off their hands. So I learned the craft properly and built my practice around people whose world I already knew.

The rule I work by is the one I nursed by: treat people the way you want to be treated. If you'd like to talk about where your books stand, book a consultation and we'll look at it together.
